A Sunday Drive.....

Since we have moved to St. John's, we have started a bit of a habit of going for Sunday Drives. While I thoroughly enjoy these countryside drives, we primary take these drives so that Dominic can search out  potential surf spots. As we are never really sure where we are going, since we sometimes drive a little, sometimes walk a little, and sometimes we even hike a little, I am always unsure of what to wear!! I am however, getting a lot better at learning how to dress for the weather here in St. John's. I have learnt that on any given day, and at any given time it may rain, snow, sleet, hail, be cloudy or sunny etc etc. 

One way to get around this rapid changing weather is to layer, layer, layer - I can't stress that enough. I have been finding all sorts of layering options in my wardrobe - giving me a ton of possibilities. While I have been mostly wearing black and dark colors this winter - the sun on Sunday inspired me to put some color on!!! My entire outfit was actually inspired by the necklace that I am wearing in the photos - I think it looks a bit like a Free People add. Anyways, the necklace is made by my super creative, super talented friend Jordan Zakoor. Make sure to take a good look because I am going to giving a necklace from her collection away later on this week!!

Dominic particularly enjoyed these photos because just behind me is a newly found surf spot, but unfortunately for him it was flat!!

On Top Of The World

Without sounding too much like a travel advertisement, I must say that St.John's and Newfoundland in general, is one of the must see destinations in Canada. With a bit of an island vibe, the province is loaded with natural beauty and cultural charm. My favorite thing about the people is that everybody ends their sentence with dear or darling. For example, "What can I get for you dear?" or "Here you go darling"!! I mean how adorable is that?

These pictures were taken at Signal Hill, which over looks the downtown harbour area (we also live down there). It is a historical army base and was the reception point for the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. Although today, it seems that the hill has become a popular spot for watch the sunset. 

This 'darling' tutu ballerina skirt from Designers Remix Collection was a Christmas gift from Dominic. You may remember it from this post a few months back to which I declared my love to it. I guess this whole blog thing is a good thing because I never even asked for it for Christmas and Dominic got it for me anyways - what an amazing husband!! I don't think I could have received anything better for Christmas!!

Winter Sparkles

This post should actually be titled, "because you can't wear skirts and I can't wait to move back to the Tropics!" Sorry for the lack of outfit posts lately but I haven't been wanting to do a photo shoot because it has been too cold here to take photos outside. I did try to take some inside photos but they turned out horribly due to bad lighting etc. So I have now decided that I would take one for team Ruby Tuesday and bear the -11 weather!! 

While the white snow makes for a pretty backdrop, I thought I would add a few props which I have picked up lately at our local thrift store. I got these two sweet vintage suitcases for $2.50 each. I am not sure when I will ever put them to use but I have a dream of using them as decoration in a clothing store that I might one day own.

The Tuque

Tuque: (tūk, tyūk) n. French Canadian word signifying a knitted woolen cap

I am proud that Canada proclaims itself as a bilingual country of French and English. Being bilingual not only offers a glimpse into other cultures, but opens up your world and point of view to whole other level. Reducing stereotypes and prejudices, often facilitating the ease of learning other languages, and traveling to far off countries, being bilingual is something we should all strive for. Sadly, the majority of people in Saskatchewan cannot speak both languages which is a disgrace to our culture and our bilingual reputation - but this is a whole other topic which I won't get into right now!!).

Although I am one of those poor people who cannot speak French, I do have an appreciation for the language and one day I would love to learn to speak it. For now, one of my favorite French -Canadian words is tuque. Adapted from the French (France) word toque meaning a hat that knocked against the back of your shoulders because it had a long droopy end. Today, the word tuque is widely used throughout Canada referring to a woolen hat that keeps you warm on those cold, snowy, winter days. 

As a Canadian, I think that tuques can be one of our very best accessories in the winter. Since tuques are readily available and relatively cheap, you can have a wide selection of tuques to pair with your other winter gear. And since my winter coat was a bit over budget, I think it will be the only winter coat I am getting this year. However, by changing up the style of tuque, you can change the entire look of the coat, making super versatile and fun. So, here are a few pics of my new coat with three different tuques!!

Madewell Order
