A few weeks ago Omiru did a brilliant post on the "10 Staples of a Man's Wardrobe". Their spot-on list immediately gave me pause to consider what the wardrobe essentials for women would be. My list would include:
- A little black dress (of course!). Look for something with a classic, figure-flattering silhouette and interesting detailing like a draped neckline or pleated hem.
- A 4-piece charcoal suit. The color is more interesting than basic black but still classic enough to wear in a professional environment. Get a jacket that hits just below the hips, a high waisted pencil skirt, slim-cut pants and a knee-length shift dress so you can mix and match for maximum versatility. Select a suit combo in a high quality fabric and have each garment tailored to fit you perfectly.
- A pair of black patent leather round-toe pumps. These will never go out of style.
- A plain white t-shirt. This wardrobe basic is crucial for casual outings.
- Straight leg dark denim jeans. A straight leg style will see you through the trends (skinny leg? wide leg?) and is perfect for dressing up or down, while the dark rinse is slimming and timeless.
- A cashmere cardigan. This can easily be paired with tailored pants or jeans and will keep you cozy when it gets chilly.
- Ballet flats. Look for a pair with a supportive sole and a slight heel to ensure that you can run around town in style and comfort.
- A classic tan knee-length double-breasted trench coat. This is guaranteed to lend your outfit a sense of sophistication (especially if you pair it with a pashmina scarf in a color that "pops" like jade green, royal purple or ruby red).
- A leather handbag that is big enough to carry all your must-have items and reflects your personality. Go for a neutral color and minimal embellishment so that the handbag can stand the test of time.
- A signature piece of jewelry, like an Art Deco watch or razorblade pendant necklace. Every woman should own some bling that makes a bold statement.
