What Say We?... Yay or Nay?!

Amerie attends Nanette Lepore and the Creative Coalition's Fashion Votes event at the new Nanette Lepore boutique on Melrose Avenue on June 16, 2008 in Los Angeles, California.

Amerie has always been a diva I love to watch out for on the red carpet. This outfit however left me a little perplexed. While I love the color an overall shape of the dress, the detailing is a little reminiscent of the 1980s. The hint of rectangular shoulders and buttoned down, flap pockets throws the dress off to me. In any case, Amerie is one of those ladies who could make a brown potato sack look fashion-forward, so I'm going to give her a "Yay". At lease this look is better than this catastrophe. Now if we could just get her to release an album...

Style Inspiration: Out at Sea

Ciara attends a taping of BET's 106 & Park on July 18, 2007 in New York City.
Amerie and Kelly mix denim with this season's nautical trend.

Anchors away! The nautical trend that’s hit our favorite stores is here to stay (throughout the summer at least). Make like a sailor about to set sea with nautical stripes in navy blue or red; high-waisted, multi button sailor pants and shorts; espadrilles and rope detail accessories. Amerie and Kelly Rowland wore denim with their striped tops and added bright red shoes and accessories to finish the look off. Ciara on the other hand jumped straight into the trend with a sporty-nautical dress and gravity defying wedges. Get some inspiration from my picks above then plan your own trip out to sea!

Gingham Anyone?

Ashanti at a recent appearance at 106 & Park.
Veronica Webb, Genevieve Jones and Amerie pose in their gingham frocks.

This summer go things a little different. While most will seek out floral and print summer dresses, opt for bold gingham instead. At first glance it can seem like an awkward fabric choice but if you get the right dress, the pattern really lends itself to the perfect summer frock. If you're worried you'll end up looking like a picnic table cloth, go for a smaller gingham print like Ashanti. Either way you're sure to stand out from the crowd. Don't believe me? Well, check out this picture of Veronica Webb during Fashion Week in New York. Tres chic!

The Evolution of the Shirt Dress...

Amerie spotted in London on July 23rd, 2007 while checking into her hotel to promote her new single 'Gotta Work' in London, UK.
Cassie poses at the press conference for the NFL Opening Kickoff 2006 at the Loews Hotel on September 6, 2006 in Miami Beach, Florida.
Wanita "D. Woods" Woodgett, member of R&B girl group Danity Kane, attends XXL magazine's Hip-Hop Soul Issue Release Party at Tenjune on December 11, 2006 in New York City.
Tracee Ellis Ross, in a Thakoon for the Gap shirt, at Vogue's Gap/CFDA Party in April, 2007.

This is not your conventional shirt dress. This breed is inspired by what you’d find in your man’s closet. Remember that episode of Sex and the City where Carrie and Big fall into the lake? Carrie heads back to Big’s apartment to change and ends up walking home in one of his shirts. That’s what this look is all about. Looking like you’ve casually thrown on your man’s shirt and you look better in it than he does. Now these shirt dresses do have a feminine edge with cinched in waists and frills despite their masculine undertones. See below for My Picks!

Color Me Bad!

Tracee Ellis Ross and her vintage clutch at the WWD Oscars Party.
Amerie, and her Fendi Spy Bag, attending the Giorgio Armani Go Red for World AIDS Day at the Giorgio Armani Store on Madison Avenue in December ‘06 in NYC.
Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing a Giambattista Valli dress and VBH clutch, attending the 2006 National Board Of Review Awards Gala last month in NYC.
Nicole Richie, holding a Pucci clutch, at the Cavern Wallpaper and Kidada Jones for Disney Coutour Celebration of their new collections January last week in West Hollywood, California.

I saw a feature in last week’s “Life & Style” magazine that talked about Sarah Jessica Parkers' multi-colored clutch by VBH (V. Bruce Hoeksema). They found like four pics of her with it in different outfits and talked about how it must be worth the $990 she paid because it goes with everything – They really don’t miss a beat! Anyway, it got me thinking about investing in a crazy colored bag that will go with almost everything in my closet. And the things it doesn’t go with?... Why not clash?! See below for some colorful ideas.

Did You Guess Right?!...

Amerie poses backstage in the awards room at the MOBO Awards 2006 at the Royal Albert Hall on September 20, 2006 in London, England.

It Suits You!

Amerie arriving at Out Magazine's Out 100 Awards last week in New York City.Mary J Blige at the GUCCI Ginza Flagship Store Opening Reception Party Tokyo, Japan earlier this month.
Star Jones attending the launch of the dramatized audio recording of "The Bible Experience" held at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ last week in LA.
British actress, Naomie Harris at the after show party following the UK premiere of "Miami Vice," in July of this year in London.
Iman and Zoe Saldana at the cocktail reception to benefit the "Keep A Child Alive" charity co-hosted with fashion designer Valentino at the Valentino Boutique last week in New York City.

If dresses aren’t your thing, you can always opt for a smart contemporary suit. I think they make the perfect alternative to a cocktail dress. You could go with a tailored fit like Mary J Blige and Star Jones or you could pick something a little unconventional like British actress Naomie Harris and Iman. Now if you’re really brave, take a style cue from Amerie and ‘bust’ out in a three-piece vest and tuxedo pants. It'll make the ultimate show-stopping entrance… you just know the men couldn’t stop looking at her chest and bare back!

Style on the Go...

Kelis arriving at Out Magazine's Out 100 Awards on Friday in New York City. Kerry Washington attending The L'Oreal Legends Gala to benefit The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at the Museum of Natural History last week in NYC.Beyonce was also at The L'Oreal Legends Gala event looking equally stunning.
Amerie also at the Out Magazine's Out 100 Awards on November 10, 2006 in New York City.

There is such a thing as being too beautiful you know! All the ladies above look gorgeous and while I know many of you won’t like Kelis’ outfit, I think she looks great (minus the shoes). On another note I think Beyonce’s lace-front wig deserves some type of award. It works almost as hard as she does… don’t let Bey play you!

LBD Season...

Model Jessica White arriving at Diddy's Vibe Magazine Cover Celebration and "Press Play" Album Release Party at Crobar in New York City last month.
Amerie attending Max Azria's Spring 2007 Dinner And Cocktail party at Ten June Restaurant and Bar in September of this year in New York City.
Jamelia arriving at the Emporio Armani One Night Only Fashion show at Earls Court as part of London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2007 in September of this year.
Jill Marie Jones on the red carpet of the First Annual ELLE GIRL Hollywood Prom party held at the Hollywood Athletic Club last year.
Elise Neal and Nia Long at the 2006 AAWIC Film Festival Closing Awards Ceremony last month in NY.

Every girl needs at least one, maybe two! The Little Black Dress (LBD) is a closet necessity, much like the gold sandal or perfect-fit jeans, it's a fail safe oufit as well as being classic. With Christmas and Thanks Giving fast-approaching, it’s time to get our party wardrobe into first gear. The women above make looking stunning seem easy… and it is! All we mere mortals need is the perfect black dress. See below for ideas...

Indian and Oriental influences in fashion are nothing new. Think innovative shapes and prints designed with silk or satin fabric, then add a splash of gold to create the perfect day-to-evening look. Be sure to keep the theme going by styling your hair appropriately. Try tying it into a bun and secure with those long chop stick looking pins! I love Nicole’s collar jacket, if anyone knows where to find one let a sista know!

Style on the Go...

Halle Berry attending the 15th Annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles Britannia Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel last Thursday Los Angeles.
Kelly Rowland arriving at the Sony Pictures premiere of "Stranger Than Fiction" at the Mann Village Theatre last month in Westwood, California.
Mary J Blige arriving at the GUCCI Ginza Flagship Store Opening Reception.
Amerie arriving at the Moet & Chandon's BE FABULOUS and The New Season of VH1's "The Fabulous Life" party at Skylight Studios last week in New York.

Hot pink remains the number one color for the red carpet, Halle is working that dress. Both Mary J Blige and Kelly have taken the office day-look to evening. I’m going to have to do a post on pencil skirts soon because I’m seeing them everywhere. Amerie’s boots are little off, but she looks good overall... I always love her hair!

What Say We?... Yay or Nay?!

Amerie arriving at a Missy Sixty fashion show, Olympus Fashion Week last night.

Hmmm, looks like Ms. Amerie was trying to squeeze too many trends into this one look. Maybe if she'd taken the denim waistcoat off and wore a simple white tank top underneath the shirt, this could have worked. Sorry to say it girl, but it's a NAY!

Style on the Go...

Mya attended the Sephora and Universal Motown' s Celebration of 'Style and Sound' the Tuesday just gone, in New York.
Amerie arriving at the Pharrell Williams & Absolut Ruby Red Pre-VMA Bash at Chinatown Brasserie Wednesday night in New York City.
Mariah Carey arriving at the 2006 BMI Urban Music Awards at Roseland Ballroom last night in New York.
Candids of Foxy Brown leaving court… don’t ask me what she did!

Second only to the red carpet, the Court House seems to be the new place to show off your sense of style! Winona, Oprah, Halle, Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown all worked the judiciary system like it were a catwalk... Do your thing ladies! Mariah has finally found a way to wear a short dress and still look classy. And my girls Mya and Amerie look so cute in their ensembles, but when did cosmetics counters become the ideal venue to promote albums Mya?!
