Down to Business: Roxanna Floyd
They say it take a village to raise a child. Well, it takes an army to groom a star and no celebrity worth their weight in gold would make an appearance without first consulting their makeup artist. Celebrity makeup artist, Roxanna Floyd, has beautified the likes of Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Lauren Hill, Ashanti and Halle Berry. She’s also work for publications such as Essence, InStyle, Redbook, Braids & Beauty and Today’s Black Woman. In the interview below she shares the secrets of her success…1. You started your career by working at the cosmetic counters of a high-end department store. How did you transform that into the wonderful career you have now?
At the time I did not know that people were paid for being a makeup artist. I never thought about makeup as a career.
At the cosmetic counter I was able to practice and hone my art. As a makeup artist you have the opportunity to work on every types of skin, face and eye shapes. Real women, not pretty models or good looking celebrities, so your skill can really develop under those conditions.
2. You have a BA in Cosmetic Marketing – sounds like a fun degree! Did you also take professional lessons in makeup artistry or are you self-taught?
I do not have a BA in cosmetics marketing. I was registered for classes but got a job with a small family owned business who sold perfume and cosmetics. The family started a small private label cosmetic line and they gave me a hands on, first class education. I learned product development in the lab, cosmetic merchandising and marketing from experience.
I taught myself makeup first and then I when to school. I had a small portfolio and wanted to make sure that I was doing the art correctly. I studied at the now defunct Robert Fiance Beauty Institute in New York.
3. How much of being a makeup artist is about technique verses intuition?
I believe technique is paramount. You can have keen intuition on where to place color, or what colors and shades to use but without solid technique coupled with creativity and a graceful hand, you’re just a person putting on makeup and 'the artist' in makeup artistry does not enter into the equation.
4. Cosmetic companies such as Bobbi Brown insist that all their employees have a firm foundation in makeup artistry. What if you don't have professional experience? What other ways can one break into the industry?
Breaking into the beauty industry is very competitive. There are so many cosmetic companies vying for customers the ability to apply and sell makeup makes a person attractive to a company. Today there seems to no way around having a foundation in makeup artistry not unless you know the one doing the hiring. Sometimes having a background in sales and a strong passion for art or fashion along with great interviewing skills can do the trick.
5. As a creative consultant at CoverGirl what are some of the things you get to do? I understand you were instrumental in the development of the Queen Collection.
As creative consultant for CoverGirl Queen Collection I work on all aspects of the product lineup. I worked with the chemist on formulas and shading as well as the brand manager and creative agencies on marketing ideas. Everything you see with a Queen Collection I had a hand in.
6. Who was your first celebrity client and how did your nerves fare?
I believe my first celebrity client was John Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono. I was working with a music video director and I did her makeup for the video and at the end of the shoot she asked for my telephone number. Yoko was very nice. I was nervous of course; I just wanted to do a good job.
7. When working with a client, especially a famous one, how do you satisfy your creative vision as well as the client? What if what they want just doesn't look good?!
At this point in my career most people know my style and trust me to do a look that will be appropriate.
I stay flexible and open. If I work with a new client I will study their photos to get a feel of their style and I always have a conversation with them to understand expectations.
8. Has being black helped, hindered or been totally irrelevant to your career's success thus far?
Now this is a loaded question! Honestly, being black has worked to my advantage and disadvantage. I had a mentor who would refer to the business in terms of their being two worlds. The white world and the black world. There is racism in both.
We believe black celebrities would hire black creative talent but sometimes they don't. In this age of the celebrity if a black celebrity does not book you for a shoot it's difficult to meet the top photographers. And most of the top photographers already have "my people" (the small select group of makeup artists, hairstylists and fashion stylists that they always work with) it's a catch 22.
9. Now if we can pick your brain for some tricks... How can women correct hyperpigmentation and combat oily skin? The two biggest woes when it comes to finding the perfect makeup!
The best way to correct depends on where it shows up. If you have it on the face there could be two different ways to approach it. First, using skincare products containing alpha hydroxy acid or fruit acid may slowly over time help to fade the dark spot. Second, the quick fix would be to apply a small amount of cover creme a shade lighter than your complexion on the spot. Then apply your foundation to your entire face and finish with powder.
The best way to combat oily skin is to apply oil controlling products to the oily area. Also, blotting tissues and powders all help temporarily. There really isn't any way around oily skin. Besides, oily skin helps you look younger longer - unless there is acne.
10. What one makeup item could you not live without and why?
Believe me after using every makeup product there is, I couldn’t live without all of it!

Kareena - Harman break ice
Debutant actor Harman Baweja, who is foraying into the film world with the much talked about futuristic film “Love Story 2050?, says he has sorted out his problems with Kareena Kapoor created by fabricated remarks. The actor says he was shocked and embarrassed after reading reports about him making uncharitable remarks about Kareena. The remarks attributed to him about Kareena being ‘robotic’ in her performances had upset Harman.
“I’d never speak like that about anyone, least of all someone who is a senior (colleague) and was gracious enough to work with me when I was just starting out. That she finally opted out of ‘Love Story 2050? doesn’t take away from the fact that we got along really well,” Harman, who has teamed up with Priyanka Chopra in the film, ent earlier this week. On an impulse he sent an SMS to Kareena, telling her how awful the words attributed to him about her made him feel. Kareena, who is in the US shooting for Sajid Nadiadwala’s “Kambhakt Ishq”, apparently replied back in a long heartfelt message, saying she has been a part of the film industry long enough to know how such things work.
She is also said to have ended her message by assuring Harman she had no ill feelings towards him and was looking forward to seeing his film that releases Friday.Harman is relieved and overjoyed that the matter has been sorted out. “All I’ll say is I’d never talk like that about anyone. Indian Idol winner Abhijeet Sawant says he is set to change his ‘romantic’ image with his acting debut in “Lottery”. “The movie is not at all a romantic flick. It is in total contradiction with what audiences must be expecting from me. It is basically a thriller,” Abhijeet told In the film, Sawant plays an accountant working in a fashion magazine, who gets trapped in a murder case. The singer-turned-actor, whose voice was widely appreciated in the film “Aashiq Banaya Aapne” and the album “Junoon”, has been cast opposite television actor Rucha Gujarati and newcomer Manisha Kelkar in the film.
However, “Lottery” was not his first film offer. Abhijeet said he was flooded with movie offers immediately after he won the first season of talent hunt show “Indian Idol”, but he turned them down.
“I thought I lacked the confidence to act at that time,” he said.
So what made him sign “Lottery”?
“I met director Hemant Prabhu a year ago and he told me about the role. I was convinced since I felt the role was very close to my real self and it suited my nature.
“Initially, I thought it would be difficult to act, but gradually I grew as an actor and the outcome was surprising for all,” he said.
Apart from “Lottery”, he has a couple of other acting offers, but he hasn’t finalised anything as yet.
Though he has taken his first steps into Bollywood, singing remains a passion for him.
He is currently a participant on STAR Plus’ reality music show “Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar”, where the winners and runners-up of previously held talent hunts across channels compete with one another.
But what made him want to compete with his colleagues again?
“I came to ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar’ because it appeared as a challenge to me to compete with all of them once again … And I also thought it would be a treat for the viewers,” he quipped.
Abhijeet’s upcoming projects as a singer include “Care of Footpath” and “Mumbai.com”.

Imran Khan, the nephew of superstar Aamir Khan and filmmaker Mansoor Khan, is the next film heir to hit the Bollywood marquee after the grand debut of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor’s son Ranbir in November 2007 with the disastrous Saawariya. Bollywood film royalty never had it so good. Comparisons between the two actors are inevitable, but being of the good old film stock, Imran’s career sure looks promising. Imran made his first public appearance orchestrated by Aamir, on Tuesday evening at his debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’s music launch held at veteran Shammi Kapoor’s home in Mumbai.
His girlfriend, Avantika Malik was there too alongside the rest of his family comprising uncles Aamir and Mansoor Khan, mother Nuzhat Khan and Kiran Rao. Imran is going steady with Avantika and it’s common knowledge that the two twenty-five year-olds are very serious about each other.

The handsome Ranbir Kapoor and his father Rishi Kapoor may look together in a film for a special song. The combination of both of them would be interesting one when they will dance together on same song and on the same set. Director Siddhaarth showed his desire to shoot a special number for both son and father. But he is feeling nervous while talking about it with Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor.
Siddhaarth said, “For the beginning of the song, we used few lines from HUM KISI SE KAM NAHIN by Kishore Kumar. Then rest of the part has been sung by Kishore and Leena Chandavarkar’s son Sumeet as an original composition. This would be little bit emotional.

For the film Siddharth has signed Vishal-Shekhar for the music of the film. Ranbir and Deepika not happy with promotion of their kiss at IIFA
Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor met each other after a long gap and they were so happy to see each other, both of them forgot that they were at the public place so when Deepika was going to receive Ranbir her boyfriend then they hugged and kissed each other. At that time IIFA team was also there and they shot that moment of their personal life and that scene was promoted by Star Plus at the IIFA function this weekend.
The question is what’s the problem if two lovers expressed their love in public?
As per the reports, Ranbir and Deepika are quite depressed on this issue and they talk on this matter with the Wizcraft, who is the official host of IIFA. As we have seen that presence of stars is decreasing at the IIFA functions from last few years. This year also many big personalities like three big Khan’s of Bollywood missed the IIFA function. Ranbir and Deepika’s have the first appearance at the IIFA but after this matter of promoting the lip-lock scene it is not sure that IIFA will able to get their popularity.

Madhur's dream to come true!!
Maverick filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar seems to have highly overwhelmed by Big B's affectionate gesture. Recently at one of the events where Big B felicitated Madhur, he went on to comment publicly that Bhandarkar was the new age (filmmaker) Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
And now as per the recent reports it is heard that Madhur has approached Big B for his next film. The accustomed national award winner Madhur who is known for his social hard hitting films where females are the main protagonist has offered a lead role to Big B. If everything goes accordingly then this would be the first time Big B and Madhur will work together. Seems like Madhur's long time dream to work with the superstar of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan will accomplish.
Madhur is almost done with the scripting of the film and will soon mount the sets. Meanwhile he is busy with the post production work of his forthcoming flick FASHION starring Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles.
